Fibromyalgia Treatment

Fibromyalgia is a complex and chronic disorder that causes pain throughout your body. Along with the pain, you may also experience fatigue and trouble sleeping. Although scientists do not fully understand what causes it, they believe the disorder is characterized by a heightened sensitivity to pain. At Essington Family Chiropractic in Beachwood, we treat a variety of conditions, including fibromyalgia.

Risk Factors for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia typically starts in middle age but can affect people at any stage of life, including children. Women are often more likely to develop the disorder than men. While anyone can get it, those with other diseases that cause pain, mood disorders, or chronic back pain are more likely to develop fibromyalgia.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

The main symptom of fibromyalgia is chronic, widespread pain that is felt throughout the body or in multiple sites. It is described as an aching, burning, or throbbing pain that typically occurs in the arms, head, legs, chest, back, and abdomen. Additionally, individuals with fibromyalgia may have trouble sleeping and experience tingling. Other reported symptoms include muscle and joint stiffness, numbness or tingling, heightened sensitivity to light, noise, odors, and temperature, as well as difficulties with concentration and memory.

Causes of Fibromyalgia

Although the specific cause of this disorder is unknown, it is believed to be related to a heightened sensitivity to pain. Research has also shown evidence of altered signaling in neural pathways that transmit and receive pain, which could contribute to fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive problems. While genetic factors likely play a role, environmental triggers may also increase the risk of developing fibromyalgia. If you have a disease that causes pain, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression, it could increase your risk of developing fibromyalgia.
